Spearmint: Spearmint contains volatile oils which act as mild anesthetics for the lining of the stomach and intestines. This is the mechanism for its wonderful utility in cases of stomachache and nausea. It also stimulates intestinal secretions to improve digestion and is an excellent carminative for colic and other gas pains. Spearmint also has a stimulating and invigorating property that makes it an ideal catalyst for herbal formulas particularly in digestive cases.

Dandelion root: Dandelion is an alterative (blood purifier), anti-inflammatory (decreases inflammation), antibiotic (eliminates bacterial infections), antiviral (eliminates viruses), bitter (stimulates the digestive system, increasing salivation, the release of pancreatic hormones and enzymes, gut movement, and repair), cholagogue (increases bile production), diuretic (decreases fluid retention), and prebiotic (feeds the good gut bacteria). Dandelion is an excellent liver tonic and, as such, makes an effective remedy for jaundice, hepatitis, and hypoglycemia. The root of the dandelion contains constituents that protect, nourish, and heal the liver. It is very effective for stomach aches either as a preventative bitter or as a remedy after the fact. Dandelion is also useful as a mild laxative, diuretic, and bile flow stimulator. It has some antibacterial effects against E. coli, and Staph. Aureu.

Chamomile: Chamomile is a carminative (relieves the discomfort of excess gas in the intestines), antispasmodic (decreases cramps or spasms in the muscles), sedative (calming/tranquilizing effect), cholagogue (increases bile production), antibiotic (eliminates bacterial infections, especially against Gram positive bacteria), antiviral (eliminates viruses), anti-fungal (eliminates fungi or yeasts), anti-inflammatory (decreases inflammation), antiallergic (lessens allergic reactions),, vulnerary (relax and widen the blood vessels, increasing blood flow, nervine (relaxes nervous system), immune stimulant, bitter tonic (stimulates the digestive system, increasing salivation, the release of pancreatic hormones and enzymes, gut movement, and repair). Chamomile is best known for calming nervine effects that relax and soothe tensions throughout the body. It is effective for digestive issues in general and particularly effective when those issues are brought on by tension, stress, or anxiety. In the upper digestive tract it can benefit stomach aches, hiatal hernias, gastric reflux, and ulcers. Its ability to calm physical symptoms as well as their underlying psychological roots makes it a wonderful ally to the herbal formula.

Ginger: Ginger is an anti-Inflammatory (decreases inflammation), antispasmodic (decreases cramps or muscle spasms), antiviral (eliminates viruses), carminative (relieves the discomfort of excess gas in the intestines), and diaphoretic (supports perspiration). Ginger can help ease upset stomachs, bloating, nausea and aid in digestion. Interestingly, ginger enhances the function of other herbs by decreasing the liver's ability to destroy them and by increasing intestinal absorption and assimilation.

Licorice: Licorice is an alterative (blood purifier), antiviral (eliminates viruses), anti-inflammatory (decreases inflammation), aperient (mild laxative), demulcent (eases mucus membranes), immune-stimulator, nutritive (high in vitamins and minerals), and a restorative (supports healing activity). These properties are an excellent aid in intestinal cases, as well as stomach or duodenal ulcers. Licorice has the unique property of potentiating the actions of other herbs and is a wonderful addition to formulas. The American licorice (G. lepidota) lacks the pleasant licorice flavor of the Chinese (G. glabra), so we use Chinese licorice in our tea at Grandad Farms.

Marshmallow root: Marshmallow is an alterative (blood purifier), anti-inflammatory (decreases inflammation), aperient (mild laxative), demulcent (eases mucus membranes), diuretic (decreases fluid retention), expectorant (breaks up mucus in respiratory tract), and vulnerary (relax and widen the blood vessels, increasing blood flow). As a demulcent herb, Marshmallow is high in wonderfully soothing mucilage. It is wonderful for inflamed mucus membranes anywhere in the body whether it be the lungs, bladder, or bowels. Marshmallow is particularly good for gut irritations and inflammations.
